The librarians in District 65 Evanston/Skokie are in for a real treat! We will have the pleasure of meeting, greeting and learning from John Schumacher, also known as John Schu, the multi-talented Ambassador for School Libraries for Scholastic Book Fairs. From blogging to lecturing, Mr. Schu has a one-of-a-kind way of encouraging kids and adults alike to get passionate about reading. Ms. Martin Chute Middle School is excited to welcome award-winning authors Steve Sheinkin and Matt de la Peña on Monday, October 24, 2016! Fifth graders (from nearby feeder schools) and 6th graders will enjoy a presentation by Sheinkin, a former textbook writer who now writes award-winning history books for young adults. His most recent book, Most Dangerous,: Daniel Ellsberg and the Secret History of the Vietnam War won the YALSA Award For Excellence In Nonfiction For Young Adults. He is also the author of Bomb: The Race To Build And Steal The World's Most Dangerous Weapon, a Newbery Honor book which received the Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Award. He is also 2016 Newbery Award winner for his critically-acclaimed picture book Last Stop on Market Street (illustrated by Christian Robinson.) Neri to our school on October 21st for a day of presentations to our 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. Mr. Neri had lunch with a few lucky students and signed books throughout his day with us. Chute would like to say thank you to Foundation 65, the Chute PTA, and the Evanston Public Library LOFT for their very generous support of our author visit. Please click here to see our G. Neri page for more information and photos from Mr. Neri's visit. In 2011, award winning author, Nikki Grimes visited Chute and feeder school Dawes, Oakton, and Walker. Parents and students gathered at the Community Open House to view writings, art and performances inspired by Ms. Grimes' work. A segment of Advanced Drama presentation "Masquerade" inspired by Bronx Masquerade by Ms. Grimes was performed at the Open House. Ms. Grimes visits were sponsored by Foundation 65 and school PTAs.
